Timber Structure Restoration, Repair, and Replacement
We restore and construct the timber bridges and buildings future generations will stand on.
Repair vs. Restoration: Understanding the Difference
They are different, repair is taking out a bad part and just replacing it with a new part, think of car repair changing a headlight out with a new one. Repair and restoration are going to be on the same page on the site but they will need to be addressed separately on the page in different sections.
Restoring pieces of our shared history for future enjoyment
Structures shouldn’t be destroyed, just because they’re old. Like the trees from which they originated, we believe that timber structures acquire grace and story, as they age.
That’s why we are passionate about restoring structures, whenever possible. This conscientious process involves assessing an entire structure, involving partnering engineering and laboratory service partners, to identify which elements of the original structure can be utilized.
For those parts which must be replaced or reassembled, we use our proprietary products and materials and apply ages-old craftsmanship to blend the new and the old. This ensures a stronger, long-lasting structure that preserves historical authenticity and honors the original design, while simultaneously applying our pioneering techniques to strengthen the structure and extend its lifespan for up to 75 years.
Repairing structures for continued use and reliability
Not all older structures require a full restoration. In many instances, our collaborative structural assessment process uncovers only one or two focused areas that need attention.
Whereas a restoration project is like bringing an antique car back to its former function and aesthetic glory, a repair project is more like replacing a headlight.
We will treat every beam and bolt before installation, and we will focus our repairs exclusively on the weakened area of your structure. The rest will remain intact and untouched, typically allowing the structure to remain in use, for the duration of the project.
While these projects are less involved than a restoration or a build, they are just as critical. When timber structures are not properly repaired, and components are not treated properly, repair work can detract from the structure’s integrity and longevity.
In fact, many of our restoration projects are necessary because of generations of misinformed, though often well-intentioned, repair jobs that have weakened the structure to the point that much more extensive work is needed to restore its strength and reliability.
Structural replacements combine storied materials with modern design
When we have to replace a structure, we use as much of the original timber as possible, out of care for our planet and admiration for wood’s timeless character.
The blending of new and old materials, coming together to create a contemporary structure, is often at the heart of what our clients are looking for.
They want their new structures to capture the craftsmanship of yesteryear, with its attention to detail and respect for local materials and flourishes, while harnessing the best of today’s building techniques and technologies.
Timber Restoration Services is at the forefront of this meeting of the past and future, and we will bring the best of each to your replacement project. The result will be an aesthetically stunning, environmentally conscientious, and historically respectful bridge or building that will last for a century.
